About this experience

Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 m, is the highest mountain in North Africa. This guided climb from Agadir follows the standard route from the village of Imlil in the High Atlas. No technical climbing is needed, but the days are long and steep. Day 1: Drive from Agadir to Imlil (about 4.5 hours), then hike up to the Toubkal refuge (3,207 m), about 5 to 6 hours. Dinner and night at the refuge. Day 2: Early start for the summit, about 3 to 4 hours up, then back down to the refuge and on to Imlil. Night in a guesthouse in Imlil. Day 3: Drive back to Agadir. A certified mountain guide leads the climb, and a mule can carry your bags to the refuge on request.

Itinerary

Agadir to the Toubkal refuge

About 4.5 hours by road to Imlil (1,740 m), meet your guide, then hike up to the refuge, about 5 to 6 hours. Night at the refuge.

Day 2 · 04:00
Summit

Pre-dawn start for the summit (4,167 m), about 3 to 4 hours up. Back down to the refuge and on to Imlil. Night in Imlil.

Day 3 · 09:00
Return to Agadir

Drive back to Agadir, arriving in the early afternoon.

Important Information

No technical climbing on the standard route, but good fitness and hiking experience are needed. From December to March there is snow: crampons and an ice axe are needed and can be hired. Altitude sickness is possible above 3,000 m; tell your guide about any symptoms.
